Being a new leader can feel intimidating. Whether you have one teammate or 20, you have a lot of responsibility and pressure. We talked to three Medix leaders to hear their best piece of advice for anybody who is new to a leadership role. Here is what they had to say:
Never Stop Learning
“Whether a new leader or a seasoned vet, it is imperative you always ‘sharpen the saw’ and seek out opportunities to continue to develop your knowledge and skill base,” said Jordan, Director of Marketing. “Your teammates count on you as a leader to be on top of new trends and technologies, and to guide them in the skills and information they need to hone in on themselves in order to develop as professionals. Always strive to be an expert in your space and never get complacent with what you already know, as industry shifts and developments demand that you are always striving to learn and absorb more knowledge.”
Help Your Employees Develop and Grow
“Becoming a new leader comes with many new and exciting challenges but my advice is to support and inspire your team to grow, develop and help guide them to achieve and surpass their goals, both personally and professionally,” said Sandra, Senior Manager of Talent Innovation. “Work together to create short- and long-term goals, and celebrate the little wins when those goals are achieved. Also when hiring new team members, hire people who you think can outshine your performance and may replace your leadership position eventually. Be the best role model you can be for your team, and you can achieve anything together!”
Inspire Others
“Assuming you were promoted or hired into your leadership role because of your individual success in some capacity, the best piece of advice I would give is that leaders need to understand that their success as a leader will not be around the things they can control themselves,” said Lee, Regional Director. “The best and most effective leaders have the ability to influence and inspire people to take action and behave in a way that will lead them to success. To do that, a leader must know his/her personnel. You must know when to ‘push’ and when to ‘pull’ people in accordance with their goals and personalities.”
Being a new leader is not easy, but keep this advice in mind to help you start on the right foot!
