Each October, organizations across the country come together to celebrate National Case Management Week. This week recognizes and celebrates the contributions of case management  professionals nationwide.

In celebration of National Case Management Week, we’re putting a spotlight on the case management profession and why it’s an area of healthcare that’s growing in importance. Have you ever considered a career in case management? Here’s what you need to know to get started.

What is Case Management?

Navigating the healthcare delivery system can be difficult. The role of a case manager is to assist patients, their families and loved ones as they move through that system. Case managers play a crucial role in patient health. They help in finding healthcare providers and facilities that best fit a patient’s needs, answer questions that patients or patient family members may have about the healthcare process, and advocate for overall patient wellness.

Case management roles require a bachelor’s degree in nursing, social work, public administration, or a related field. Most positions also require relevant work experience in the field, such as nursing or social work. Case managers must have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Strong organizational skills and critical thinking are also a top priority, as case managers work with many different patients, each having unique healthcare needs. Case managers also need a strong sense of empathy and compassion. Case managers are advocates for patients, and the ability to relate to people is a must to be successful in this profession.

Why Consider a Career in Case Management?

  • Growth. A career in case management offers room for personal and financial growth. As COVID-19 has significantly impacted the healthcare industry, there is an even greater need for case management professionals as more and more patients move through the healthcare delivery system. Not only is it a profession in high demand, but as healthcare evolves, new patient programs and initiatives continue to emerge throughout the country. With those new programs comes a need for leaders in the case management field to assist patients as they navigate and utilize these programs and services.
  • Impact. If you’re looking for a career where you can positively impact lives, case management is a great fit. The impact that a case manager has on the life of a patient is monumental. Oftentimes, when people look back on their healthcare journey, they remember the case managers who had their back throughout the process. Case managers are with patients and their families every step of the way, playing an essential role in overall patient health. Case management provides the opportunity for true patient impact.

To all case managers positively impacting lives day in and day out, happy National Case Management Week! Thank you for being advocates for patients and providing the knowledge and guidance needed to navigate the healthcare system. We see you, we support you and we celebrate you.
