Each October, organizations across the country come together to celebrate National Case Management Week. This week recognizes and celebrates the contributions of case management professionals nationwide.
In celebration of National Case Management Week, we’re putting a spotlight on the case management profession and why it’s an area of healthcare that’s growing in importance. Have you ever considered a career in case management? Here’s what you need to know to get started.
What is Case Management?
Navigating the healthcare delivery system can be difficult. The role of a case manager is to assist patients, their families and loved ones as they move through that system. Case managers play a crucial role in patient health. They help in finding healthcare providers and facilities that best fit a patient’s needs, answer questions that patients or patient family members may have about the healthcare process, and advocate for overall patient wellness.
Case management roles require a bachelor’s degree in nursing, social work, public administration, or a related field. Most positions also require relevant work experience in the field, such as nursing or social work. Case managers must have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Strong organizational skills and critical thinking are also a top priority, as case managers work with many different patients, each having unique healthcare needs. Case managers also need a strong sense of empathy and compassion. Case managers are advocates for patients, and the ability to relate to people is a must to be successful in this profession.
