Can you tell us about your career path so far?
“My career began with training in general surgery and emergency medicine. For the next 20 years, I practiced emergency medicine at Level I trauma centers and community hospitals. My informatics career began at Fairview Health System (now Fairview Health Services) in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 2000 as Medical Director of IS. During my time there, I led multiple computerized physician order entry (CPOE) projects in hospitals through the health system. In 2005, I was awarded the Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems (AMDIS) Award for achieving 100 percent electronic order entry at multiple community hospitals.
Later that year, I moved to what was then known as HealthEast Care System to take on the role of Chief Medical Informatics Officer (CMIO). During that time, I was awarded the 2012 AMDIS Award for use of electronic health records (EHR) to improve quality outcomes, as well as the 2012 Healthcare Informatics/AMDIS IT Innovation Advocate Award. I also served as Executive Lead for new EHR selection, and oversaw the Epic Implementation project for our health system between 2013 and 2015.
In 2015, I transitioned into the CMIO role at Rush University Medical Center. In recent years, I was also a member of the KLAS Clinical Advisory Board, serving from 2014 to 2017.
Actually, one of the awards I’m proudest to have received is the 2015 Patrick Blessing Core Purpose Award from Medix. I was honored with it during my time at RUSH. I believe it exemplifies the purpose that is the driving force behind the Medix and Medix Technology teams.”
Why did you decide to join our team?
“I first partnered with Medix’s Epic team (now known as Medix Technology) for assistance on an Epic install when I was working at HealthEast back in 2012-2014. Not only did they do a great job supporting the project, but I also made some wonderful friends on the team. We have all kept in touch ever since! Fast-forward to 2020, and when it was time to move on from the CMIO role at Rush, the opportunity arose to work again with Medix, this time as a part of the Medix Technology team. I jumped at the chance knowing the great group of people I would be working with!”
What will your role be as a part of the Medix Technology team?
“As Chief Medical Informatics Officer, I will serve as physician advisor for the Medix Technology team. I am excited to partner with our clients at all stages of their Epic journey, from implementation to optimization. I will also be driving industry thought leadership for our team and offering guidance around areas of strategic planning, including improving clinical workflows, simplifying EHR processes to improve end user satisfaction, reducing burnout and costly turnover, and maximizing technological investments.”
What are you most passionate about when it comes to healthcare today?
“I am most passionate about improving outcomes for patients. I hope to use my expertise to help decrease the burden of the EHR on providers and the rest of the care team through workflow enhancements and care team coordination.”
