Medix Technology is proud to introduce our new CIO Advisor – Diane Salois-Swallow! As a leader of digital innovation for the Canadian healthcare system, she brings years of experience to the team.
In a recent conversation, we asked Diane to share insights into her career path so far, as well as her areas of expertise. Check out the interview below to get to know the newest member of the Medix Technology team – Diane Salois-Swallow!
Can you tell us about your career path so far?
“My career started as a nurse in Quebec, which led me to teach nursing in Victoria, British Columbia for several years. While teaching, I started my Masters in Education and my husband bought me my first portable microcomputer – the Osborne. At that moment, my career in informatics was launched. This device opened my mind to so much potential for improving and transforming healthcare through technology.
Next, I moved to Toronto to work at York Central Hospital, now known as Mackenzie Health, as their Nurse System Analyst. Eventually, I became their CIO and served in that role for over 15 years. In 2016, I was appointed co-chair of an expert provincial panel to develop evidence-based guidelines on integrating digital technology into professional practice at hospitals and other healthcare organizations. In 2017, Mackenzie Health became the first hospital in Canada to implement an Epic full-suite EMR. That same year, I was named among the Women Leaders in Digital Health, an award presented to female visionaries who are harnessing the power of IT to transform health and healthcare in Canada.
In 2019, I continued my involvement in Health IT as a Senior Advisor at Mackenzie Innovation Institute (MI2) to contribute to the advancement of digital health.”
Why did you decide to join our team?
“I first partnered with Medix’s Epic team when Mackenzie Health needed staff for the EMR implementation. Thanks to their support, the team we built was outstanding and the implementation was a remarkable success. The partnership we formed during that project led me to continue working with them on innovation staffing strategies during my time at MI2.”
What will your role be as a part of the Medix Technology team?
“As the CIO Advisor for Medix Technology, I will be collaborating with the leadership team on business strategies, product development and identifying emerging trends in the Canadian Health IT market.”
What are you most passionate about when it comes to healthcare today?
“I am passionate about innovation, analytics and – most importantly – how to best optimize these efforts in order to deliver value. I believe that the solutions to today’s healthcare challenges will be reached by better engaging patients and staff as we advance digital health together.”
