It’s no secret that searching for a job is a daunting process. The uncertainty, rejection and frustration of finding a new position can feel overwhelming. If you’re experiencing job search stress, you’re not alone. According to a recent study surveying unemployed adults, over 50 percent reported experiencing mental health issues such as anxiety and stress as a result of the pressure to find a new position.
Searching for a job doesn’t have to take a toll on your mental health. Establishing a solid routine, setting goals for yourself and taking time to focus on you throughout the process can help ease job search stress and increase your chances of landing a new, great role.
Establish a routine.
Searching for a job can have highs and lows. Some days you may feel motivated, complete multiple applications and research companies. Other days, you may feel overwhelmed and uncertain about the future. One of the best ways to balance the highs and lows of the job search is to establish a routine. Searching for a new position can feel like a full time job in and of itself, so you should treat it as such. Set your alarm for a reasonable time and plan to spend a few hours each day searching or applying for positions that interest you. It’s important to set boundaries when you’re establishing your routine. Spending eight straight hours on applications is most likely going to leave you feeling burnt out. Make sure you build in time for meals, breaks and other activities that help relieve stress, such as exercise or spending time with friends. Establishing a routine will create consistency and structure in your day, helping reduce your stress level as you navigate the job search process.
Set goals.
Once you’ve established your routine, it’s time to set some goals. Job searching can be difficult at times, but goals can help you stay on track. Start by setting small goals such as revamping your LinkedIn profile or uploading your resume to online job boards. You can also set goals around how much time you spend researching companies each day or the number of applications you complete. Once you’ve set your goals, write them down. Putting your goals on paper will help keep you organized, accountable and increase the likelihood of achieving them. Setting goals will help you to celebrate the small wins and reduce the stress or pressure you may feel when the going gets tough.
Take time for your mental health.
Establishing a routine and setting goals can help ease job search stress, but some days, you still may find yourself feeling stuck and overwhelmed. On these days, it’s important to take time to focus on your well being. Step away from the search for a while if you need to!
The unfortunate truth is that you’re most likely going to face rejection while applying and interviewing for new positions, but each rejection can also present an opportunity to learn and improve your skills. Just because you didn’t land that job doesn’t mean it was a waste of time. Ask for feedback from interviewers and implement that feedback into your interview process. Celebrate the small victories such as making it to a final round interview or connecting with someone on LinkedIn. Incorporate positive speech and positive thoughts into your daily routine. If all else fails, find someone you can talk to, a trusted friend or a mental health professional, when things become too heavy to handle on your own. Taking time for reflection and wellbeing will help relieve stress and keep you motivated to find the right fit for your career
Finding a new job can feel stressful. Establishing and sticking to a routine, setting goals and taking time to focus on your mental health will help ease your job search stress and set you up for success to land your next position.

I have been looking for a job for the last two years and to no avail. I have a counselor from the NYSDOL revising my resume for different positions that I might be qualified for, and I am registered on all the well-known job sites. I have 3 degrees and 15+ years of experience. I feel horrible that I have a lot to offer and I am being overlooked. I am not covering up my education because I earned all the work and the honor that goes with them. They (employers, people) say there are a lot of jobs out there, so why am I unemployed? I have gone back to therapy so that I don’t go into a deep depression. I also rely on my faith to keep me above ground. I don’t know what these employers want, but they give out double messages. I am very frustrated, and I don’t know what to do except to keep applying.

I have been invited for several face to face interview, nothing was good. I was very confident to the position with my experience and training background. One failure after the other , I concluded – “age is the mater”, no matter what the EOE is.
